Most first Cape Le Grand plans fail by stacking Lucky Bay, Frenchman Peak and a Class 5 Coastal Trail section onto a late start — or by trying this park from Perth.

Filter ideas below. Heat, wind and a full Lucky Bay car park change the day more than the map does.
First visit

1–3 hours · sealed 2WD · car park fills
White sand, turquoise water, possible kangaroos. Have a Plan B bay before you leave Esperance.
Short hard climb
Frenchman Peak
~3 km return · Class 4–5 granite
262 m dome, summit cave, 360° views. Wet rock is a turnaround. Descent is the harder part.
Walk a slice
Thistle–Lucky section
2.5 km · Class 3 · ~1 hour
The Coastal Trail slice most people should actually walk. Vehicle points both ends.

Hellfire Bay
Overflow when Lucky Bay is full
Granite headlands. Do not automatically start Class 5 just because you are annoyed.

Lucky Bay
easyThe park’s signature bay: white sand, turquoise water, possible western grey kangaroos especially in quieter hours. Campground is bookable via Park Stay. Beach driving is optional and high-risk. Kangaroos are not a daily guarantee.

Frenchman Peak
hardShort, steep granite climb to a 262 m dome with a cave near the summit and views over the park, bays and islands. Not a casual lookout stroll. Wet rock, wind and heat turn people around. Not walked for this guide.

Coastal Trail
hardBay-to-bay coastal traverse linking Le Grand Beach, Hellfire Bay, Thistle Cove, Lucky Bay and Rossiter Bay. Spectacular and genuinely hard in places. Cairns and pegs, slippery granite, heat, and subtle markers. Not walked for this guide.

- Full traverse is a long, awkward granite-and-sand day — or break it at vehicle-accessible bays
- Time
- Allow 8–9 hours for a full one-way, or 1–3 hours per section

White sand is not a city park
- No dogs. 1080 baiting is ongoing — poisonous to humans, dogs and cats.
- Bring all drinking water. Camps do not supply it.
- Frenchman Peak: wet granite is a turnaround. Descent is harder.
- Lucky Bay car park full: Hellfire / Thistle / Le Grand Beach — not a verge wait.

The usual first day: early sealed drive, Lucky Bay while the car park still has space, then either Frenchman Peak if the rock is dry or Hellfire / Thistle if the peak is too much. Not a Perth day-trip.

Is there an entry fee for Cape Le Grand National Park?
Yes — standard WA vehicle park entry applies (Explore Parks WA fees table, planning figures used across WA fee parks and last aligned 26 Aug 2026): private vehicle 12 or fewer occupants $17 (concession $10); motorcycle $10; large vehicle 13+ occupants $8 per occupant (concession $3.50). Walk-in / cycle-in typically pay no vehicle fee. Passes cover entry only, not camping. Camping is a separate Park Stay booking. Figures are planning numbers — confirm live. This site never sells park entry.
How long from Esperance? Can I day-trip from Perth?
About 50–56 km / 30–45 minutes on sealed road from Esperance. Perth is ~700–750+ km / ~8+ hours — not a day-trip. Sleep in Esperance or camp in-park (booked).
What should I do first on a first visit?
Lucky Bay while the car park still has space, then either Frenchman Peak if the granite is dry or Hellfire / Thistle Cove if the peak is too much. Do not stack a full Coastal Trail day onto a first highlights visit.
Do I need 4WD?
No for the core visit — sealed 2WD to Lucky Bay, Hellfire, Thistle and the Frenchman Peak trailhead. Optional beach driving from Wylie Bay is a different, high-risk activity. Official notes flag beaches as treacherous for vehicles.
