Hellfire Bay headlands and beach, Cape Le Grand National Park, January 2025

Lucky Bay car park full — what now

Best for: Peak summer, school holidays, long weekends

Plan B when Lucky Bay’s day-use car park is full: Hellfire, Thistle Cove and Le Grand Beach, plus when to leave rather than wait.

  • Have Hellfire, Thistle Cove or Le Grand Beach as Plan B before you leave Esperance.
  • A full Lucky Bay lot is not a reason to drive the beach or park on vegetation.
  • Kangaroos and white sand exist at other bays too — the postcard is not the only park.

Le Grand Beach with granite backdrop, Cape Le Grand National Park, January 2025

Day-tripping Cape Le Grand from the wrong base

Best for: People who still think this is a Perth afternoon

Why Perth (and Albany as a dawn base) fail this park, and why Esperance or a booked Lucky Bay site is the operating layer.

  • Last town fuel/food/medical/water: Esperance.
  • Sleep in Esperance or camp in-park (Park Stay). Perth is overnight country, not a day-trip.
  • Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun are loop staging, not dawn Lucky Bay bases.

Coastal Trail in one day: when it’s too long

Best for: Fit visitors tempted to “just walk the whole coast”

15 km vs ~20 km, Class 5 granite, shuttle reality, and the sections that still count as walking Cape Le Grand.

  • Thistle → Lucky (Class 3, ~1 hour) is the section most people should walk.
  • Full one-way needs a vehicle shuttle, water and a turnaround time.
  • Do not add Frenchman Peak to a full Coastal Trail day.

Frenchman Peak (Mandooboornup) granite dome from the west, Cape Le Grand National Park, January 2024

· ~6 min read · Plan B · Frenchman Peak · Safety

Frenchman Peak on wet granite — turn around

Best for: Anyone who packed a peak day into a southerly

Why the 262 m dome is a reverse on wet or mossy rock, who should not start, and what to do with the rest of the day.

  • Stick to the marked east-slope path. Shortcuts are worse on descent.
  • No water on the route. Who should not: young kids, mobility issues, wet days, people who need reception.
  • Plan B: Hellfire / Thistle / Lucky Bay — the peak can wait.

Illustrative western grey kangaroos on white sand at Lucky Bay, Cape Le Grand National Park — AI-generated, not a documentary photograph

· ~5 min read · Wildlife · Lucky Bay · Expectations

Lucky Bay kangaroos are not a daily guarantee

Best for: First-timers who came only for the beach-roo photo

Western grey kangaroos use Lucky Bay, especially quieter hours — and they may stay at camp. Do not feed. Do not invent a wildlife show.

  • Quieter hours help. Midday peak often does not.
  • Do not feed. Give space. They are wild.
  • The bay is still the product if the sand is empty of kangaroos.

Four-wheel-drive vehicle on Lucky Bay sand, Cape Le Grand National Park

· ~6 min read · Plan B · 4WD · Access

You do not need the Wylie Bay beach drive

Best for: Hire-car drivers tempted by a sand shortcut

Sealed 2WD to Lucky Bay is the core visit. Optional beach 4WD from Wylie Bay is tides, soft sand and expensive recoveries — not a shortcut.

  • 2WD sealed road is enough for Lucky Bay, Hellfire, Thistle, Frenchman Peak trailhead.
  • Hire contracts and recovery bills are the Plan B you wanted to avoid.
  • Commercial 4x4 tours are a bought product — not permission to copy the line in a sedan.
