This checklist is independent and unofficial — not DBCA / Parks and Wildlife Service.
In-park camping is Park Stay only (Lucky Bay / Le Grand Beach) — never affiliated here.
1. Before you leave Esperance
Status & weather
- Explore Parks WA park page checked this morning
- alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au checked
- emergency.wa.gov.au if fire / smoke is in the news
- Granite dry if Frenchman Peak is on the plan
- Someone knows your leave time + expected return
Packing (day pack)
- All drinking water — none provided at Lucky Bay camp
- Snacks / simple lunch
- Sun hat + high SPF (white sand glare)
- Shoes with grip if the peak is on (not thongs on granite)
- Phone + offline map / alert screenshots
- Emergency+ app (000 needs reception)
- Wind layer for the bay / summit
- Cash/card for WA park entry (we do not sell fees)
2. Esperance day skeleton (~30–45 min each way + 4–7 hrs in the park)
- Night before — Agree out loud: primary = Lucky Bay. Optional extra = Frenchman Peak if dry, else Hellfire or Thistle. If Lucky Bay’s lot is full: Plan B bay, not a verge wait.
- Leave Esperance early — Fisheries → Merivale → Cape Le Grand Road (sealed 2WD). Fuel and water in town. Pay or display vehicle entry at the station.
- Lucky Bay first — 1–2 hours is a success. Do not feed kangaroos. Swim only if the bay looks civil.
- One extra only — Peak if dry and fit, or one other bay. Do not add a Class 5 Coastal Trail section on a first highlights day.
- Reverse with daylight — Dusk wildlife on Cape Le Grand Road. Fuel is in Esperance, not in the park.
3. Full-day rule (protect the day)
- One primary (usually Lucky Bay) + at most one extra.
- Do not stack Lucky + Peak + Hellfire + a Class 5 section on a first Esperance day.
- A complete first visit can stop at Lucky Bay (or an honest Plan B bay).
- In-park camping exists (Lucky Bay 56 / Le Grand Beach 14) — Park Stay booking only, not walk-up. Town beds if you did not book.
4. Order-of-stops cheat sheet
First-timer priority
- Vehicle entry at the station
- Lucky Bay (sealed 2WD)
- Optional: Frenchman Peak if granite is dry
- Or Plan B: Hellfire / Thistle Cove
Skip if short on time / heat / wet rock
- Frenchman Peak on wet or mossy granite
- Coastal Trail full length or any Class 5 “just a bit further”
- Optional Wylie Bay beach 4WD as a shortcut
- Treating Perth as the overnight base for this clock
5. Parking & vehicles
- Lucky Bay fills in peak — name Hellfire / Thistle as Plan B before you leave town
- Do not block the car-park loop or wait on the verge
- Sealed 2WD is enough for Lucky Bay, Hellfire, Thistle and the peak picnic area
- Beach 4WD is optional and high-risk — not required for this visit
- Never park on vegetation
6. Safety non-negotiables
- No dogs. 1080 baiting is ongoing.
- Stay on marked tracks. Frenchman Peak is a published walk when dry — not off-route scrambling.
- White sand + UV: carry water; a sea breeze does not cancel heat illness.
- Ocean: unpatrolled — rips and skill, not a pool.
- Do not feed wildlife.
- Emergency: call 000. 000 needs reception. Download Emergency+ on Esperance Wi-Fi.
7. Fees (stamp, not a live till)
Standard WA park entry as published on Explore Parks (planning figures last aligned 26 Aug 2026):
vehicle $17 / concession $10 / motorcycle $10. We do not sell park entry. Confirm on
exploreparks.dbca.wa.gov.au/park-entry-fees.
Camping is a separate Park Stay booking.
