Itineraries

These plans are for real Esperance days and Lucky Bay camps — drive time, heat, granite and energy included — not a “do everything” list. Pick the one that matches your group, then open it for a timeline, packing notes and what to skip. Print from any plan page, or grab the free day-trip checklist (PDF) / practical planner anytime.

Every itinerary defers to Explore Parks WA / DBCA for track status and alerts. Hard walks only appear where the plan names them — and only when official status is open. Plans are not walked — planning from official public pages. Vehicle entry is not camping.

Which plan fits you?

  • Esperance day highlights — Lucky Bay first; one extra only.
  • Two-day camp — Lucky Bay Park Stay booked; cooler morning for the peak or a section.
  • Family-short — Lucky Bay or a quieter bay; no Class 5.
  • Coastal sections — Thistle–Lucky first; full traverse only with a shuttle.
  • Frenchman Peak morning — dry granite only.

If two plans both “sound good,” pick the shorter one. You can always add something on the ground; you can’t make more daylight on the highway home.

Full day from Esperance (30–45 min each way + 4–7 hours in the park)

Esperance day: Lucky Bay first, then one extra

First visit by car from Esperance

The usual first day: early sealed drive, Lucky Bay while the car park still has space, then either Frenchman Peak if the rock is dry or Hellfire / Thistle if the peak is too much. Not a Perth day-trip.

Half to full day from Esperance

Family-short: Lucky Bay and one quiet bay

Kids, mixed mobility, first beach day — not Class 5

Lucky Bay (or Hellfire if Lucky is full), a picnic, a swim if the bay looks civil, and a hard no on Frenchman Peak and the full Coastal Trail.

Full hard day, or two days with a Lucky Bay camp

Walker day: Coastal Trail by sections

Experienced walkers with a vehicle shuttle

Do not default to the full 15–20 km one-way. Walk Thistle–Lucky, or Hellfire–Thistle only if granite is dry. Full traverse needs a shuttle, water and a PLB conversation.

Frenchman Peak morning from Esperance

Fit walkers, dry rock, early start

The short hard product: 1.5–3 hours on granite, then one bay if you have legs left. Wet days stay in the car — swap to a bay itinerary.
