Family-short: Lucky Bay and one quiet bay
Guide updated · verify Explore Parks WA / DBCA the morning you go
Lucky Bay (or Hellfire if Lucky is full), a picnic, a swim if the bay looks civil, and a hard no on Frenchman Peak and the full Coastal Trail.

Lucky Bay

Cape Le Grand rewards families who lower ambition and raise water. Lucky Bay is the default easy product: sealed 2WD, white sand, toilets, a picnic, a swim if the bay looks civil. Hellfire or Thistle still counts if Lucky Bay’s lot is full — that is competence, not a consolation prize.
Dogs are not allowed. 1080 baiting is ongoing. Bring all drinking water. White sand reflects UV — hats are not optional for adults either. Kangaroos are a bonus at quieter hours, not a scheduled meet-and-greet. Do not feed. Do not chase a photo into the dunes. Do not put a child on a kangaroo.
Frenchman Peak and the Coastal Trail Class 5 can wait for cooler, older, fitter years. Thistle–Lucky (Class 3, ~1 hour one way) is the only optional walk on this plan, and only if energy is real and you have a reverse. A successful family day is measured in meltdowns avoided, not bays collected.
Sleep in Esperance (or a booked Lucky Bay site). Perth is still the wrong base. Verify alerts and water-safety common sense the morning you go. Not walked.
Track status, weather, fees and closures change — verify on Explore Parks WA / DBCA before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. In-park camping is Park Stay only (Lucky Bay / Le Grand Beach) — never affiliated here.

Timeline
Night before
Family contract: Plan A bay, Plan B bay
Agree out loud: primary = Lucky Bay. If the lot is full = Hellfire or Thistle. No peak promises to kids who have never done granite slabs. Fill drinking water in Esperance. Pack shade, snacks that are not only “lunch”, a dry change of clothes, and Emergency+. No dogs. 1080 is ongoing — keep kids on formed sand and picnic areas, not in scrub “exploring.”
Morning drive
Sealed road, early enough
30–45 minutes from Esperance. Vehicle entry at the station. If someone is already carsick or fried, the day can be one bay and reverse — that still counts. Do not add a beach-4WD “adventure” to impress kids; it is optional, high-risk, and not required.
Late morning
Lucky Bay (or Plan B) — main event
If Lucky Bay is full, leave for Hellfire or Thistle without a car-park argument. Picnic shade is limited — stay off vegetation. Swim only if the bay looks civil and an adult is watching; no lifeguard. Reapply SPF. Kangaroos: watch, don’t chase, don’t feed. If a child is melting at 11 am, you already succeeded — skip the optional walk.
Lunch
Food is strategy
Eat before anyone is hangry. Hydrate. Honest mood check: happy / done / needs quiet. If done, afternoon is Esperance toilets and ice-cream — that is a complete Cape Le Grand day. Do not invent Frenchman Peak “because the weather is nice.”
Optional short walk
Thistle–Lucky only if energy is real
Class 3, about an hour one way, vehicle points both ends if you can set a simple car shuffle — still shoes, water and a reverse. Turn around the moment anyone is done. No Hellfire Class 5 “just a bit further.” If lots at Thistle are awkward with tired kids, skip the walk entirely.
Back to Esperance
Protect the reverse
Toilets and food in town beat a late granite idea. Dusk wildlife on Cape Le Grand Road. If you camped, pack out and keep kids off roads at dusk. Notes for next time: earlier start, or a booked Lucky Bay night so the afternoon is rest not a highway.

Parking & access tips
- Name Plan B (Hellfire or Thistle) before you leave Esperance — say it in the car.
- If Lucky Bay is full, leave. Do not wait on the verge with hot kids.
- Never leave bags visible; bay car parks are not a luggage locker.
- Stay in booked campsites only if you overnight — day-use is not camp sprawl.
- Fuel and ice-cream restock are Esperance jobs.
Skip if short on time / energy
- Frenchman Peak with toddlers, reluctant walkers, or wet rock
- The full Coastal Trail or any Class 5 from Hellfire
- Forcing Thistle–Lucky when the group is already sun-cooked
- Optional beach 4WD as a family “shortcut”
- Promising Lucky Bay kangaroos as if they were a booking
- A late Esperance start and a late reverse with no nap buffer
Extra tips
Who this plan is for
- Families with young children
- Mixed ages including grandparents
- First Cape Le Grand day when energy is unknown
- Anyone recovering from the long haul into Esperance the day before
- Groups who will measure success in calm, not kilometres
Family decision gates
- If a child is already melting at 11 am: one bay only, no Thistle–Lucky
- If Lucky Bay is full: Hellfire or Thistle without a fight
- If ocean conditions look wrong: sand play, no swimming
- If wildlife approaches: back up — do not feed or crowd for photos
- If heat is extreme: shade + short sessions beat “one more bay”
What success looks like
- Kids still willing to talk about Lucky Bay tomorrow
- Adults not arguing in a car park at 4 pm
- Wildlife watched at distance — no feeding photos
- Honest notes: the peak can wait for a cooler, older-kid year

- Lucky Bay beach & campground precinctThe park’s signature bay: white sand, turquoise water, possible western grey kangaroos especially in quieter hours. Campground is bookable via Park Stay. Beach driving is optional and high-risk. Kangaroos are not a daily guarantee.
- Thistle Cove to Lucky BayThe Coastal Trail’s easiest named section: Thistle Cove (whistling rock) to Lucky Bay. Still sand, rock and sun — not a footpath in a city park. Vehicle points at both ends.
- Hellfire BayA scenic bay between sea-swept rocky headlands. Strong Plan B when Lucky Bay’s car park is full. The Coastal Trail Class 5 sections that leave this bay are a different day.
