Two days: camp at Lucky Bay

2 days / 1 night (Park Stay booked)Best for: People who booked Lucky Bay and want a second bay or a peak without rushing Esperance

Overnight at Lucky Bay (56 sites, unpowered, no drinking water provided) then a cooler morning for Frenchman Peak or a Coastal Trail section. Camping is a separate system from vehicle entry.

Book parkstay.dbca.wa.gov.au first. Peak holidays sell out. Lucky Bay has 56 unpowered sites; they are not pre-allocated — choose a vacant one on arrival. Le Grand Beach (14 sites) is the other in-park option, not a secret overflow for Lucky Bay. Max-stay rules can tighten in school holidays — confirm live on Park Stay. This site never affiliates camping bookings.

Vehicle entry can be paid with the camping booking or later at the station — still a separate product from the site fee. Bring all drinking water from Esperance. No fires. No dogs. 1080 baiting is ongoing. Hot water and generator windows are operational details: confirm on official pages the week you go; do not treat a blog memory as live.

Day 1 is arrive, set camp, and Lucky Bay at quieter hours. Day 2 is the peak or a named trail section while granite is cooler — then pack out. Do not treat the overnight as permission to start a full Coastal Trail traverse you still have to reverse and pack.

Always check Explore Parks WA, Park Stay, alerts.dbca and Emergency WA before you leave town. Not walked. Wudjari country — camp quietly.

Track status, weather, fees and closures change — verify on Explore Parks WA / DBCA before you leave, then use the timeline below as a planning skeleton only. In-park camping is Park Stay only (Lucky Bay / Le Grand Beach) — never affiliated here.

Timeline

  1. Before you leave Esperance

    Booking, water, alerts

Confirm the Park Stay booking on Wi-Fi. Fill all drinking water (jerrycans, not “we will find a tap”). Screenshot alerts, Emergency+ and your booking. No dogs, no firewood plan — fires are banned. Last supermarket and fuel are in Esperance. If the booking failed, switch to the Esperance day-highlights plan — do not wild-camp in the park.

  2. Day 1 — arrival

    Set camp, then stop collecting

Pay/display vehicle entry if it is not already on the booking. Choose a vacant site — one site per booking; do not occupy a second “for the view.” Set camp, water check, shade. Do not start Frenchman Peak after a late Esperance arrival. Late heat on granite plus a new tent is how ankles roll.

  3. Day 1 afternoon

    Lucky Bay at quieter hours

Beach, swim if civil, photos. Kangaroos may be at camp more than on the postcard sand — still no feeding, still no chase. Stay off dunes and vegetation. If the day-use lot is chaotic, you already have a booked site: wait it out rather than driving to invent a second adventure.

  4. Day 1 evening

    Camp rules, not a festival

Pack out rubbish. No fires. Respect published generator windows — confirm live on Park Stay. Headlamp for camp and toilets. Dusk wildlife on internal roads. Patchy reception: Emergency+ is already on the phone. Early night — Day 2 is the walking day.

  5. Day 2 morning

Peak or a named trail section

Cooler granite for Frenchman Peak if dry and the group is fit. Or Thistle–Lucky (Class 3) if you want a real walk without Class 5. Leave a turnaround time that still packs camp in daylight. Wet rock: stay on the bay. Do not add Hellfire Class 5 because you “have a spare morning.”

  6. Day 2 — pack out

    Rubbish out, water discipline, reverse

Pack out all rubbish. Leave the site as you found it. Reverse to Esperance with fuel still in the tank. If you loved the quieter bay hours, the next upgrade is two nights — not a same-day Perth push. Debrief: did the peak belong on Day 2, or should it have been its own morning from town?

Packing

  • All drinking water for the stay (none provided)
  • Headlamp
  • Sun + wind layer

  • Sleeping layer for a windy bay night
  • Sturdy shoes if Day 2 is the peak
  • Rubbish bags (pack out)
  • Simple first aid + blister care
  • Offline map + power bank
  • Park Stay booking screenshot (no signal is not an excuse)

Parking & access tips

  • One campsite per booking. Do not occupy a second site “for the view”.
  • Day-use and camp are neighbours — do not spill camp gear into the day-use loop.
  • No fires. Generators only in published hours — confirm live on Park Stay.
  • Lucky Bay day-use can still fill — campers do not get a second car on vegetation.
  • Rossiter / beach 4WD is not the camp access road for this plan.
  • Fuel and water restock are Esperance jobs, not in-park.

Skip if short on time / energy

  • A full Coastal Trail traverse on Day 2 — you still have to pack camp
  • Frenchman Peak after a late Day 1 arrival
  • Walk-up camping if Park Stay is sold out
  • Fires, dogs, or “just this once” extra vehicles on a site
  • Treating Le Grand Beach as Lucky Bay overflow without its own booking
  • Leaving rubbish “for the next campers” because bins look full

Extra tips

Who this plan is for

  • Groups who already hold a Lucky Bay Park Stay booking
  • First-timers who hated the Esperance reverse-clock squeeze
  • Walkers who want a cooler peak morning without a pre-dawn town start
  • People willing to haul all drinking water and pack out rubbish

Decision gates (say them out loud)

  • If Park Stay is not booked: do not arrive hoping for a gap — use Esperance and the day-highlights plan
  • If Day 1 arrival is late: bay only — peak is Day 2 or not at all
  • If granite is wet on Day 2: Thistle–Lucky or stay on the sand
  • If water is running low: reverse to Esperance, do not ration into a Class 5
  • If generator or camp rules conflict with your group: you chose the park, not a festival

What success looks like

  • Booked site in, booked site out, rubbish in the car
  • One walking product completed well on Day 2
  • Nobody heat-sick from empty bottles
  • Honest notes: two nights next time, or a dedicated peak morning from town

Next trip upgrade

  • Two nights if school-holiday max-stay allows (confirm live)
  • Read stay hub: Park Stay first, Esperance beds as the real alternative
  • Coastal sections itinerary if you have a shuttle and want Class 5 — not as a camp-morning impulse

  • Lucky Bay beach & campground precinctThe park’s signature bay: white sand, turquoise water, possible western grey kangaroos especially in quieter hours. Campground is bookable via Park Stay. Beach driving is optional and high-risk. Kangaroos are not a daily guarantee.
  • Frenchman Peak (Mandooboornup)Short, steep granite climb to a 262 m dome with a cave near the summit and views over the park, bays and islands. Not a casual lookout stroll. Wet rock, wind and heat turn people around. Not walked for this guide.
  • Thistle Cove to Lucky BayThe Coastal Trail’s easiest named section: Thistle Cove (whistling rock) to Lucky Bay. Still sand, rock and sun — not a footpath in a city park. Vehicle points at both ends.
