Esperance gateway
Guide updated · not walked — verify Explore Parks WA / DBCA
Last town for fuel, food, medical, drinking water and beds. The park is a sealed 30–45 minute drive east. Perth is ~8+ hours — not a day-trip.
- Best for: Everyone who is not already booked at Lucky Bay or Le Grand Beach campgrounds
- Time: Sleep here for day-trips; camp in-park only with a Park Stay booking
- Park via Fisheries Road → Merivale Road → Cape Le Grand Road. Optional high-risk beach 4WD from Wylie Bay is not required. No ferry, no public transport into the park.

The last town is the plan
Cape Le Grand feels remote because you carry water and lose reception, not because it is a week from a supermarket. Esperance is the operating layer: fuel, food, hospital-scale medical, drinking water, and a bed if Park Stay is full.
Perth is ~700–750+ km / ~8+ hours. Albany is a longer south-coast drive, useful on a loop, not as a Lucky Bay dawn base.
Fuel, food, medical — by stay intent
Day trip: fill fuel and drinking water in Esperance even for a short visit. The park does not replace a supermarket. Medical is in town. No invented prices.
Multi-night / camp: carry all camp drinking water from Esperance. Pack out rubbish. If Lucky Bay is sold out, Esperance beds or Le Grand Beach (if booked) — not a bush camp invent.
Wylie Bay beach drive is optional
The sealed Cape Le Grand Road is the visit. The optional ~22 km beach drive from Wylie Bay (just east of Esperance) is tides, soft sand and recovery risk. Official notes flag beaches as treacherous. Not required for Lucky Bay, Hellfire, Thistle or the Frenchman Peak trailhead.
Wrong bases that look clever on a map
Ravensthorpe and Hopetoun are staging towns on a Fitzgerald / south-coast loop. They are not dawn Lucky Bay bases. Albany is a real town with beds — still the wrong 8 am Lucky Bay clock unless your product is actually that loop.
See the wrong-base Plan B article if you still think this is a Perth afternoon.

Itineraries that use this area
Full day from Esperance (30–45 min each way + 4–7 hours in the park)
Esperance day: Lucky Bay first, then one extra
The usual first day: early sealed drive, Lucky Bay while the car park still has space, then either Frenchman Peak if the rock is dry or Hellfire / Thistle if the peak is too much. Not a Perth day-trip.
Half to full day from Esperance
Family-short: Lucky Bay and one quiet bay
Lucky Bay (or Hellfire if Lucky is full), a picnic, a swim if the bay looks civil, and a hard no on Frenchman Peak and the full Coastal Trail.

Lucky Bay car park full — what now
Plan B when Lucky Bay’s day-use car park is full: Hellfire, Thistle Cove and Le Grand Beach, plus when to leave rather than wait.

FAQ — Esperance
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Can I day-trip from Perth?
Not honestly. The park is a 30–45 minute drive from Esperance after you have already done ~8+ hours from Perth. Sleep in Esperance or camp in-park (booked).
Is there public transport into the park?
No practical public transport. Private vehicle or a commercial Esperance tour. Confirm the operator’s walking time — many 4x4 beach products do not climb Frenchman Peak.
Where is the last supermarket / hospital-scale medical?
Esperance. The park does not sell your drinking water. Emergencies: 000 (needs reception) and Emergency+.
