The Plan B bays that are first-rate on their own
Lucky Bay gets the Instagram. Hellfire and Thistle are the operator’s overflow and, on many days, the better walk. Explore Parks describes Hellfire as a secluded bay between rocky headlands, and Thistle as a bay with a spectacular outlook and a whistling rock.
Use them as day-use first. Add Coastal Trail sections only if you packed shoes and water for granite.
Hellfire is two products, not one
Product one: picnic, swim when civil, photographs, overflow when Lucky Bay is full. That is an easy-to-moderate bay stop.
Product two: Class 5 Coastal Trail sections leaving Hellfire toward Le Grand Beach or Thistle Cove. Awkward granite angles, slippery when wet, genuinely hard. Do not start those because you are annoyed about a full Lucky Bay lot.
Thistle Cove and the whistling rock
Thistle Cove is the usual start or finish of the Class 3 Thistle–Lucky slice (~2.5 km, about an hour). Vehicle access both ends. That is the Coastal Trail most people should actually walk.
The whistling rock is for listening, not scrambling for a better audio angle. Still no dogs, still carry water, still pack out rubbish.
Pairing without stacking
Hellfire + Thistle as two bay stops is a honest half day. Thistle–Lucky as a walk plus Lucky Bay sand is a honest full day if you have a reverse or shuttle.
Do not add Frenchman Peak to a Class 5 Hellfire section. Pick one hard product.
Highlights at a glance
- Hellfire Bay headlands
- Thistle Cove whistling rock
- Class 3 Thistle–Lucky section
- Class 5 sections onward from Hellfire
Practical tips
- If Lucky Bay’s lot is full, do not wait — come here.
- Thistle → Lucky is the family-friendlier Coastal Trail slice.
- Shoes for granite even on a “just the bay” stop — wet slabs happen.
- Class 5 onward from Hellfire needs a turnaround time and water, not leftover picnic energy.
Facilities & services

Thistle–Lucky section
moderateThe Coastal Trail’s easiest named section: Thistle Cove (whistling rock) to Lucky Bay. Still sand, rock and sun — not a footpath in a city park. Vehicle points at both ends.
- Grade
- Shortest, family-friendlier Coastal Trail section between two car parks
- Time
- About 1 hour one way
- Distance
- 2.5 km one way · ~1 hour typical reports — confirm live on Explore Parks

Coastal Trail
hardBay-to-bay coastal traverse linking Le Grand Beach, Hellfire Bay, Thistle Cove, Lucky Bay and Rossiter Bay. Spectacular and genuinely hard in places. Cairns and pegs, slippery granite, heat, and subtle markers. Not walked for this guide.
- Grade
- Full traverse is a long, awkward granite-and-sand day — or break it at vehicle-accessible bays
- Time
- Allow 8–9 hours for a full one-way, or 1–3 hours per section
- Distance
- Official trail page: 15 km one way; park overview sometimes ~20 km — flag both and confirm live on Explore Parks

Itineraries that use this area
Full hard day, or two days with a Lucky Bay camp
Walker day: Coastal Trail by sections
Do not default to the full 15–20 km one-way. Walk Thistle–Lucky, or Hellfire–Thistle only if granite is dry. Full traverse needs a shuttle, water and a PLB conversation.
Half to full day from Esperance
Family-short: Lucky Bay and one quiet bay
Lucky Bay (or Hellfire if Lucky is full), a picnic, a swim if the bay looks civil, and a hard no on Frenchman Peak and the full Coastal Trail.
Full day from Esperance (30–45 min each way + 4–7 hours in the park)
Esperance day: Lucky Bay first, then one extra
The usual first day: early sealed drive, Lucky Bay while the car park still has space, then either Frenchman Peak if the rock is dry or Hellfire / Thistle if the peak is too much. Not a Perth day-trip.

FAQ — Hellfire & Thistle
Tap a question to expand the answer.
Is Thistle Cove worth it if I already did Lucky Bay?
Yes if you want granite, fewer people, and the whistling rock. No if you are already cooked and still wanted Frenchman Peak.
Is Hellfire a good Plan B when Lucky Bay is full?
Yes for a bay stop. Do not automatically start the Class 5 Coastal Trail because you are annoyed.
Can kids walk Thistle to Lucky?
Most realistic “kids on the Coastal Trail” section (Class 3) — still supervise on rock, still shoes and water, still a reverse plan.
