Guide updated · official camping first · town beds second
In-park nights are Park Stay WA only — Lucky Bay (56 sites) and Le Grand Beach (14 sites). Vehicle entry is a separate system. Esperance is the last town for fuel, food, medical and water. This site never affiliates Park Stay or park fees.
Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park fees, Parks Passes and official DBCA / Park Stay bookings are never affiliated.
Families / services
Esperance beds if you need shops and a hospital-scale town. Camp only with a booking and enough drinking water for everyone.
Dawn at Lucky Bay
Book Lucky Bay. Sites are not pre-allocated — choose a vacant one on arrival. Peak holidays sell out. No walk-up invent.
South-coast loop
Ravensthorpe / Hopetoun / Albany are staging towns for other parks. They are the wrong dawn base for Frenchman Peak.

Park Stay WA campgrounds
Lucky Bay: 56 unpowered reverse-in crushed-rock sites, beachside, toilets, showers (hot water not guaranteed), food-prep shelters and gas BBQs. Le Grand Beach: 14 unpowered sites, quieter, behind dunes. No drinking water provided. Pack out waste. No fires. No dogs. Generator hours restricted — confirm live on Park Stay. Book only via Park Stay. This site does not affiliate camping fees.
Booking.com searches may earn a commission. They do not include Park Stay rights. Card photos are real Wikimedia Commons images for place context — not the specific hotels on Booking.com.
Esperance from Dempster Head
Esperance
Primary last-town base — fuel, food, medical, drinking water and commercial beds. Best overnight if Lucky Bay camp is full or you want a town shower.

A tour does not replace checking Explore Parks WA / DBCA alerts, heat, or sealed-road vs beach-4WD rules yourself.
What to bring
Practical kit for open sand, UV and a Turquoise Coast sea breeze
Drinking-water containersOfficial campgrounds do not provide drinking water. Bring all you need from Esperance — day visitors and campers.
Sun hat + high SPFWhite sand reflects UV. Heat on granite and beaches is the default summer problem, not an exception.
Sturdy hiking shoesFrenchman Peak and Class 5 Coastal Trail sections are granite slabs — thongs fail when wet or mossy.
PLB / satellite messenger (optional)000 needs reception. Patchy coverage is a planning note, not a carrier map. Optional extra for the full Coastal Trail.
Offline maps / power bankScreenshot Explore Parks / alerts and download Smartreka or Avenza on Esperance Wi-Fi.
Day pack 15–25 LWater, hat, layers for the southerly, snacks — even a Lucky Bay-only day.
First-aid + blister kitGranite and sand punish thin socks. Carry it on Frenchman Peak and Coastal Trail sections.
HeadlampCamp return after last light, or a late Frenchman Peak descent you should have turned around before.
Light wind layerSummit wind on Frenchman Peak and winter southerlies on the bays — not an alpine storm shell.
Water filter / treatment (campers)Do not assume tap water at Lucky Bay or Le Grand Beach. Treat only if you have a known source — most visitors just carry town water.
