Things to do in Cape Le Grand

Most first visits revolve around Lucky Bay, with an optional Frenchman Peak if granite is dry, or Hellfire / Thistle Cove as Plan B. The Coastal Trail full length is a different sport. Optional beach 4WD is not required. Do not try to collect every bay on a first visit.

Some stay, tour and gear links may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Park fees, Parks Passes and official DBCA / Park Stay bookings are never affiliated.

Day one rule

Pick one primary experience (usually Lucky Bay). Do not collect the peak, a Class 5 section and three bays on a first Esperance day.

Weather / energy bail-out

Hellfire or Thistle beat forcing Lucky Bay’s full lot. Wet granite: skip Frenchman Peak. Bail-outs are competence.

Hard walk filter

Frenchman Peak and Coastal Trail Class 5 only when dry, fit and planned — never as impulse add-ons after a long swim.

  1. 1

    Lucky Bay

Icon bay · easy day-use · peak lots fill

The classic first-visit bay — white sand, turquoise water, possible western grey kangaroos at quieter hours (not guaranteed). Sealed 2WD. Car park fills in peak: Hellfire / Thistle / Le Grand Beach are Plan B, not a verge wait.

  2. 2

    Frenchman Peak (Mandooboornup)

    Hard · ~3 km return · 1.5–3 hrs · dry rock only

Short hard granite climb to 262 m with a summit cave and 360° views. Descent is the harder part. Wet or mossy rock is a turnaround — not a lookout stroll.

  3. 3

    Hellfire Bay

    Plan B bay · picnic · Class 5 trailhead

Granite-framed overflow when Lucky Bay is full. Picnic and swim when civil. The Class 5 Coastal Trail sections that leave this bay are a different day — do not start them because you are annoyed about a full lot.

  4. 4

    Thistle Cove & Thistle–Lucky walk

    Class 3 · ~1 hr one way · family-selective

Whistling rock and the Class 3 Coastal Trail slice most people should actually walk (~2.5 km, vehicle points both ends). Still shoes, water and a reverse plan — not a boardwalk.

  5. 5

    Coastal Trail (sections or full)

Hard · Class 5 overall · shuttle for full one-way

Bay-to-bay granite and sand. Official-adjacent figures disagree 15 km vs ~20 km — confirm live. Full one-way is Class 5, 8–9 hours, shuttle required. Most first visits should not do the whole length.

  6. 6

    Wildlife (kangaroos) & spring wildflowers

Year-round wildlife · spring bloom · no feeding

Western greys at Lucky Bay are a bonus, not a show — quieter hours, do not feed, they may stay at camp. Spring sandplain banksia and wildflowers: stay on tracks. 1080 baiting is ongoing. No dogs.

  7. 7

    Swimming, fishing, photography

    Conditions-aware · RecFishWest · no scramble

Lucky Bay is generally more sheltered than open ocean — still not a pool. RecFishWest guidance if you fish. Photograph granite and sand without feeding wildlife or scrambling unmarked rock.

  8. 8

    Optional beach 4WD (not required)

    Optional · high-risk · tours ≠ DIY

Sealed Cape Le Grand Road already reaches Lucky Bay, Hellfire, Thistle and the Frenchman Peak trailhead. The Wylie Bay sand run is tides, recoveries and hire-car risk. Official notes flag beaches as treacherous. Tours are a bought product, not a DIY briefing.

  9. 9

    Esperance as last town

Last supplies · day-trip base · not Perth

Fuel, food, medical and drinking water live in Esperance — 30–45 minutes west, not in the park. Perth is ~8+ hours. Use town beds if Park Stay is full. Villages on a south-coast loop are not dawn Lucky Bay bases.
