Decide before you start
- Easy: Lucky Bay beach and day-use. Hellfire / Thistle as picnic Plan B.
- Moderate: Thistle Cove to Lucky Bay (Class 3) — still shoes and water.
- Hard granite / traverse days: Frenchman Peak, or Coastal Trail Class 5 sections (Hellfire–Le Grand, Hellfire–Thistle). One hero only. Early start, dry rock, water, turnaround time. Full one-way needs a vehicle shuttle.
Trying to do two big walks plus the postcard lookout is how first visits go wrong. Pick the table row that matches your energy, then open the full trail guide.

Quick comparison (planning only)
| Walk / lookout | Effort | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Frenchman Peak | hard | Allow 1.5–3 hours return | Fit, sure-footed walkers who want 360° views to the Recherche Archipelago |
| Coastal Trail | hard | Allow 8–9 hours for a full one-way, or 1–3 hours per section | Experienced walkers who will use vehicle points as bail-outs, not a casual beach stroll |
| Thistle–Lucky section | moderate | About 1 hour one way | First-timers who want a coastal walk without Class 5 granite commitment |
| Lucky Bay | easy | 1–3 hours on site for most day visitors | First-timers, families, photography, a swim on a civil day |
| Hellfire Bay | moderate | 45 minutes–2 hours at the bay; 2–3 hours if you add a Coastal Trail section | Quieter bay when Lucky Bay is packed; photographers; walkers staging Class 5 sections |
Easy
Moderate
Thistle–Lucky section
moderateThe Coastal Trail’s easiest named section: Thistle Cove (whistling rock) to Lucky Bay. Still sand, rock and sun — not a footpath in a city park. Vehicle points at both ends.
- Grade
- Shortest, family-friendlier Coastal Trail section between two car parks
- Time
- About 1 hour one way
- Distance
- 2.5 km one way · ~1 hour typical reports — confirm live on Explore Parks

Hellfire Bay
moderateA scenic bay between sea-swept rocky headlands. Strong Plan B when Lucky Bay’s car park is full. The Coastal Trail Class 5 sections that leave this bay are a different day.
- Grade
- Headland and beach day-use; Class 5 if you walk on toward Le Grand or Thistle
- Time
- 45 minutes–2 hours at the bay; 2–3 hours if you add a Coastal Trail section
- Distance
- Short beach and headland wandering from the car park; trail sections extra

Hard
Frenchman Peak
hardShort, steep granite climb to a 262 m dome with a cave near the summit and views over the park, bays and islands. Not a casual lookout stroll. Wet rock, wind and heat turn people around. Not walked for this guide.
- Grade
- Steep granite dome on the marked east-slope path — exposed slabs, no water, descent is the harder part
- Time
- Allow 1.5–3 hours return
- Distance
- ~3 km return · 140–190 m gain typical reports — confirm live official figure

Coastal Trail
hardBay-to-bay coastal traverse linking Le Grand Beach, Hellfire Bay, Thistle Cove, Lucky Bay and Rossiter Bay. Spectacular and genuinely hard in places. Cairns and pegs, slippery granite, heat, and subtle markers. Not walked for this guide.
- Grade
- Full traverse is a long, awkward granite-and-sand day — or break it at vehicle-accessible bays
- Time
- Allow 8–9 hours for a full one-way, or 1–3 hours per section
- Distance
- Official trail page: 15 km one way; park overview sometimes ~20 km — flag both and confirm live on Explore Parks

Trails FAQ
Short answers. For live grades, distances and closures use Explore Parks WA — not this page.
Tap a question to expand the answer.
What is the best first walk in Cape Le Grand?
Most first-timers treat Lucky Bay as the day-use product, then add Thistle–Lucky (Class 3) or Frenchman Peak if the granite is dry. The full Coastal Trail is a different day. Always verify with Explore Parks WA / DBCA.
How hard is Frenchman Peak vs the Coastal Trail?
Frenchman Peak is a short exposed granite climb (~3 km return, 1.5–3 hours, Class 4–5 in listings). Descent is the harder part; wet rock is a reverse. The Coastal Trail is a long bay-to-bay day (15 km vs ~20 km on official-adjacent pages — confirm live), Class 5 overall. Most first visits should walk Thistle–Lucky (Class 3), not the full one-way.
Can I do Lucky Bay, Frenchman Peak and a Class 5 section in one day?
Usually a bad first-visit plan. Lucky Bay plus the peak plus a Class 5 stretch is how people get cooked. Pick one extra only. Always verify with Explore Parks WA / DBCA.
