Le Grand Coastal Trail
Area: Hellfire Bay & Thistle Cove
Guide updated · verify live track status with Explore Parks WA / DBCA
Bay-to-bay coastal traverse linking Le Grand Beach, Hellfire Bay, Thistle Cove, Lucky Bay and Rossiter Bay. Spectacular and genuinely hard in places. Cairns and pegs, slippery granite, heat, and subtle markers. Not walked for this guide.
Do not pair: Do not add Frenchman Peak to a full Coastal Trail day. Pick one hard product.
Turnaround: Bail at Hellfire, Thistle, Lucky or Rossiter vehicle points. Easiest reverse / short day: Thistle → Lucky. Do not continue into Class 5 because “we’ve come this far”.
- Starting a 15–20 km one-way at 10 am without a shuttle
- Wet Class 5 granite Hellfire–Thistle
- No drinking water beyond a 600 ml bottle
- Assuming Lucky Bay camp is walk-up
- Full traverse is a long, awkward granite-and-sand day — or break it at vehicle-accessible bays
- Allow 8–9 hours for a full one-way, or 1–3 hours per section
- Official trail page: 15 km one way; park overview sometimes ~20 km — flag both and confirm live on Explore Parks
- Effort: hard
- Best for: Experienced walkers who will use vehicle points as bail-outs, not a casual beach stroll

Where you start
Le Grand Beach (west) or Rossiter Bay (east) — or any mid-bay car park
Vehicle access at Le Grand Beach, Hellfire Bay, Thistle Cove, Lucky Bay and Rossiter Bay. The access road between Lucky Bay and Rossiter is unsealed in parts. Confirm live 2WD advice on Explore Parks.
How to get there
- Sealed Cape Le Grand Road from Esperance to the main bays including Lucky Bay. 2WD for the core sealed visit. Rossiter can be a rougher spur — check official / local advice.
- A vehicle shuttle is the honest way to walk the full one-way. Two cars, or a driver who is not walking. Hitching is not a plan.
- Park entry is a vehicle system, separate from camping. If you overnight at Lucky Bay mid-traverse, book Park Stay first — do not assume a walk-up site.
How to do it (step by step)
- Sections (planning figures from research baseline — confirm live official trail page): Le Grand Beach → Hellfire Bay 6.2 km Class 5 ~3 hrs; Hellfire → Thistle Cove 4.7 km Class 5 ~2–3 hrs; Thistle → Lucky Bay 2.5 km Class 3 ~1 hr; Lucky Bay → Rossiter Bay 6.6 km Class 4 ~2–3 hrs.
- Marked by cairns and pegs except on beach sections. Rocky headlands, heath and sand. The Class 5 granite angles (especially Hellfire–Le Grand and Hellfire–Thistle) are the “this is not a beach walk” parts.
- Easiest family-friendlier section: Thistle Cove → Lucky Bay. Full one-way is 8–9 hours and a long day even for fit walkers.
- Two-day option: book Lucky Bay campground and split the traverse. No extra walk permit beyond camping + entry.
Spectacular, and not a casual bay hop
The Coastal Trail is the park’s long walk: granite slabs, heath, and the same white-sand bays people drive to. Explore Parks describes a challenging walk linking the coastal sections. The park overview sometimes says about 20 km; a dedicated trail listing is often 15 km one way, Class 5, 8–9 hours. Both figures appear in official-adjacent material — treat the live trail page as the number you pack for.
Most visitors should not walk the whole thing. The product is the sections with car parks at both ends.
Day shape: full traverse vs sections
Full one-way: Le Grand Beach (west) to Rossiter Bay (east), or reverse. 8–9 hours, genuinely hard, shuttle required. Prior hiking experience is the honest bar.
Section days: Hellfire and Thistle are the awkward granite; Thistle to Lucky is the short Class 3 that families actually finish. Lucky to Rossiter is longer Class 4 with unsealed-road access questions — confirm live on Explore Parks.
Overnight: book Lucky Bay, walk in from the west one day and out to Rossiter or reverse the next. That is still two hard-ish days, not a beach holiday with a walk attached.
Shuttle, water, PLB
Without a second vehicle, walk an out-and-back from one bay or the Thistle–Lucky circuit-by-car. Hitching between trailheads is not an itinerary.
Carry water for the whole section plus reserve. Camps do not supply drinking water. Pack out rubbish — no bins.
Consider a PLB or satellite messenger for the full traverse. Emergency+ on a phone still needs you to be able to call or for someone to miss you. Download offline maps in Esperance.
Class 5 granite and who should not
The Hellfire–Le Grand and Hellfire–Thistle stretches are the ones that humble people who only packed for Lucky Bay sand. Wet rock is a different walk. Heat on open granite is a different walk again.
Who should not attempt the full length: anyone who needs a formed path, groups with young children, first-time remote walkers, people without a turnaround time, wet-weather days, and anyone treating cairns as optional.
Check alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au for track status before you lock a shuttle.

Extra tips
- Carry a PLB for the full traverse. Coverage is patchy. 000 needs reception.
- Water and shade are limited. Pack as for a remote day, even though Esperance is 45 minutes away by car from the trailheads.
- Cairns can be subtle. If you are off the line on granite, reverse to the last marker — do not invent a descent.
- Who should not attempt the full length: first-time walkers, groups with young children, anyone without a shuttle plan, wet-rock days, heatwaves.
Often paired with Thistle–Lucky section— only if energy and weather allow.
