Hellfire Bay

Area: Hellfire Bay & Thistle Cove

A scenic bay between sea-swept rocky headlands. Strong Plan B when Lucky Bay’s car park is full. The Coastal Trail Class 5 sections that leave this bay are a different day.

Do not pair: Do not treat Hellfire as both overflow beach and a full Class 5 day.

Turnaround: Car park. Do not start Hellfire–Thistle late in the day.

  • Starting Class 5 in the heat after a Lucky Bay fail
  • Headland and beach day-use; Class 5 if you walk on toward Le Grand or Thistle
  • 45 minutes–2 hours at the bay; 2–3 hours if you add a Coastal Trail section
  • Short beach and headland wandering from the car park; trail sections extra
  • Effort: moderate
  • Best for: Quieter bay when Lucky Bay is packed; photographers; walkers staging Class 5 sections

Where you start

Hellfire Bay car park

Signed bay off the sealed park roads.

How to get there

  1. Same sealed park approach as Lucky Bay. Do not assume Hellfire is empty on a peak Lucky Bay day — it is the usual overflow.

How to do it (step by step)

  1. Use it as a swim / picnic / photo stop, or as a trailhead for Class 5 sections only if you packed for granite.
  2. Rock fishing and wet granite need extra caution. RecFishWest guidance applies if you fish.

Overflow bay, not a consolation prize

Explore Parks describes a secluded bay between sea-swept rocky headlands. On many peak Lucky Bay days this is where you should have gone first. Photographs hold up. The granite frame is the point.

Picnic vs Class 5

Stay at the bay if that was the plan: picnic, swim when civil, photos, reverse. The Coastal Trail sections that leave Hellfire toward Le Grand Beach or Thistle Cove are Class 5 — steep, awkward granite, slippery when wet.

Do not start those because Lucky Bay was full. That is a different packing list and a different turnaround time.

Pair with Thistle, not the peak

If energy is low, Thistle Cove next (whistling rock) beats Frenchman Peak. If energy is real and granite is dry, Thistle–Lucky Class 3 is the honest walk from this cluster.

Extra tips

  • Better first-timer Plan B than forcing Lucky Bay. Pair with Thistle Cove, not a peak climb, if energy is low.

Often paired with Thistle–Lucky section— only if energy and weather allow.
