Thistle Cove to Lucky Bay
Area: Hellfire Bay & Thistle Cove
Guide updated · verify live track status with Explore Parks WA / DBCA
The Coastal Trail’s easiest named section: Thistle Cove (whistling rock) to Lucky Bay. Still sand, rock and sun — not a footpath in a city park. Vehicle points at both ends.
Do not pair: Do not add Hellfire–Thistle Class 5 “because it’s next door” with tired kids.
Turnaround: Either car park. Out-and-back from Thistle if Lucky’s lot is full.
- Lucky Bay car park full with no Plan B
- No water on a hot Class 3
- Shortest, family-friendlier Coastal Trail section between two car parks
- About 1 hour one way
- 2.5 km one way · ~1 hour typical reports — confirm live on Explore Parks
- Effort: moderate
- Best for: First-timers who want a coastal walk without Class 5 granite commitment
Distance, grade, time, vehicle rules and open/closed status change — always verify with Explore Parks WA / DBCA (exploreparks.dbca.wa.gov.au) and alerts.dbca.wa.gov.au before you go.

Where you start
Thistle Cove or Lucky Bay day-use car parks
Sealed access to Lucky Bay. Thistle Cove is a signed bay stop on the park roads.
How to get there
- Drive the sealed park roads from the entry station. Park at one bay and walk to the other only if you have a shuttle or are happy to reverse.
- Lucky Bay car park fills in peak summer and holidays — have a Plan B bay (Hellfire / Thistle / Le Grand Beach).
How to do it (step by step)
- Walk Thistle → Lucky for the “arrive at the icon” feeling, or Lucky → Thistle if Lucky’s car park is already ugly.
- Whistling rock at Thistle Cove is a granite feature — listen, don’t climb for a better audio angle.
- This is still a no-dogs, 1080, carry-water walk.
The section most people should actually walk
If you want “we walked the Coastal Trail” without an 8-hour granite day, this is the honest slice: Class 3, about 2.5 km, vehicle access both ends, Thistle Cove’s whistling rock at one end and Lucky Bay at the other.
It still needs shoes, water and a reverse plan. It is not a boardwalk.
Shuttle, reverse, Lucky Bay full
Walk Thistle → Lucky for the “arrive at the icon” feeling, or Lucky → Thistle if Lucky’s car park is already ugly. Out-and-back from Thistle if Lucky’s lot is full.
Do not add Hellfire–Thistle Class 5 “because it’s next door” with tired kids. That pairing ban is the usual failure.

Extra tips
- Best first coastal walk if Frenchman Peak is too much and the full trail is fantasy.
- Combine with a Lucky Bay swim only if conditions look civil and you have time to reverse or shuttle.
Often paired with Lucky Bay— only if energy and weather allow.
