Failed visits are usually overstuffed plans: a Perth departure, Lucky Bay at peak car-park hour, then Frenchman Peak and a Class 5 section because a list said don’t miss them.
Esperance day-trip
Lucky Bay first. One extra: peak if dry, or Hellfire / Thistle. Reverse with daylight.
Overnight at Lucky Bay
Park Stay booked. Bring water. Cooler morning for the peak or a trail section.
Family / mixed ability
Lucky Bay or a quieter bay. Hard no on Class 5 and wet granite.
Walker sections
Thistle–Lucky first. Full Coastal Trail only with a shuttle and a turnaround time.
How long do I need?
From Esperance the drive is typically 30–45 minutes each way on sealed road. Perth is a different trip. People who should not attempt this park as a Perth day-trip: anyone still packing a CBD lunch hour.

When to go
Peak summer and WA school holidays: Lucky Bay fills fast, heat and bushfire risk rise. Shoulder (March–May, September–November) is often better for walking. Spring: wildflowers on the sandplain. Winter: cold nights, storms, slippery granite. Confirm fire conditions on Emergency WA — this is not a live board.
Fees — three separate systems
Fees change; confirm on official DBCA / Park Stay pages and park alerts. This site never sells park entry or camping.
A. Day vehicle / park entry
Planning figures from the WA fee-park table (confirm live on park-entry-fees): standard vehicle ≤12 $17; concession $10; motorcycle $10; large vehicle >12 $8 pp (concession $3.50). Walk-in / cycle-in typically no vehicle fee. Covers this and most other fee parks the same day (exceptions exist elsewhere). Campers pay entry only on the first day of a stay. Passes (Holiday / Annual) are entry only — not camping. Display in vehicle. Pay on arrival, with a camping booking, or via shop.dbca.wa.gov.au.
B. Camping (Park Stay)
Book parkstay.dbca.wa.gov.au. Lucky Bay 56 sites; Le Grand Beach 14. Up to 180 days ahead. One site per booking; choose a vacant site on arrival. Max stay commonly 14 nights if any night falls in WA public school holidays, 28 otherwise — confirm live on Park Stay. Per-person per night (children ≤5 free); exact dollars are paid at booking, not copied as “official forever” here. No drinking water provided. Never affiliated.
C. Walk permits
No special walk permit identified for Frenchman Peak or the standard Coastal Trail. Day use sits under park entry. Commercial operators have separate rules.
Camping
Official buttons first: Park Stay WA. Lucky Bay: 56 unpowered reverse-in crushed-rock sites, beachside, toilets, showers (hot not guaranteed), gas BBQs, no fires, generator hours restricted (commonly listed 8am–1pm and 5pm–9pm — confirm live on Park Stay). Le Grand Beach: 14 sites, quieter, same water/rubbish rules. Pack out waste.
First-day plan
- Fill water and fuel in Esperance. Screenshot alerts. Download Emergency+ and an offline map.
- Sealed Cape Le Grand Road. Pay or display vehicle entry.
- Lucky Bay. If full → Hellfire or Thistle. Do not wait in the loop.
- Optional extra: Frenchman Peak only if granite is dry and you have 1.5–3 hours.
- Reverse to Esperance, or camp only if Park Stay is booked.

Getting there
Primary: private vehicle from Esperance via Fisheries Road → Merivale Road → Cape Le Grand Road, sealed to the main attractions including Lucky Bay. Entry station near the main entrance. No ferry. No public transport into the park. Optional ~22 km beach drive from Wylie Bay is tides, soft sand and recovery risk — not required. Rossiter access includes unsealed sections in parts — confirm live on Explore Parks.
Phone coverage
Treat reception as limited or patchy. We do not publish carrier maps and we do not require Starlink. 000 needs reception. Download the Emergency+ app in Esperance so a phone can still store GPS. Offline maps (Smartreka / Avenza) are planning, not optional flavour. A PLB or satellite messenger is an optional extra for the full Coastal Trail or remote granite — not a fashion item for a Lucky Bay picnic.
Weather, safety, operating layer
- Heat and UV — white sand reflects. No crocs. Granite slippery when wet.
- Bushfire: check Emergency WA / alerts. No campfires ever at these camps.
- 1080 baiting ongoing. No dogs. Feral bees possible.
- Coastal / rock fishing hazards — RecFishWest guidance. Swimming at Lucky Bay is generally more sheltered, still conditions-aware.
- Emergencies: 000 (needs reception), Emergency+ app.

Day trip from Esperance
Fill fuel and drinking water in town even for a short visit. The park does not replace a supermarket. Medical: Esperance. No invented prices.
Multi-night / camp
Carry all camp drinking water from Esperance. Pack out rubbish. If Lucky Bay is sold out, Esperance beds or Le Grand Beach (if booked) — not a bush camp invent.

Do I need a park pass for Cape Le Grand?
Standard WA vehicle entry applies unless you walk or cycle in or hold a valid Parks Pass. Can I camp inside the park?
Yes — two official campgrounds booked on Park Stay WA: Lucky Bay (56 sites) and Le Grand Beach (14 sites). Unpowered. No drinking water provided. No fires. No dogs. Vehicle entry is a separate system (can be paid with the camping booking or later). Never affiliated here.
Do I need 4WD?
No for the core visit. Sealed 2WD to Lucky Bay, Hellfire, Thistle and the Frenchman Peak trailhead. Optional beach 4WD from Wylie Bay is tides and soft sand — official notes flag beaches as treacherous. Rossiter’s spur can be unsealed in parts — confirm live.
Are dogs allowed?
No, not anywhere in the park. 1080 baiting is ongoing — poisonous to humans, dogs and cats. Assistance animals: official DBCA wording only.
Is there mobile reception?
Do not assume coverage in the park. Official-style planning note: without coverage you cannot call 000. Download Emergency+ in Esperance (GPS location still helps). Optional PLB for the full Coastal Trail. We do not publish carrier maps.
How long from Esperance? From Perth?
Esperance: ~50–56 km / 30–45 minutes sealed. Perth: ~8+ hours — not a day-trip. Sleep in Esperance or camp in-park (booked).
Will I see kangaroos at Lucky Bay?
Maybe — quieter hours help. They may be at camp and not on the sand. Do not feed. Sightings are a bonus, not a show.
